Brazil

Brazil has two National Representatives: Theodora Karnakis and Manuela Zereu.

Theodora Karnakis

The SIOG National Representative of the year Award recognizes the outstanding contribution to Geriatric Oncology and more particularly to SIOG.

The National Representative of the Year 2017 was awarded to Theodora Karnakis (BR) for her excellent work and support in the organisation of the 1st SIOG LATAM joint session (in collaboration with the Brazilian Society of Clinical Oncology), to recognize her commitment and loyalty to SIOG and to acknowledge her passion for geriatric oncology.

Medical degree from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (2001); Specialization in Clinical Medicine at Santa Casa of São Paulo medical School (2003-2004); Specialization in Geriatrics at Faculty of Medicine from the University of São Paulo-FMUSP (2005-2006); Geriatrics degree by the Brazilian Society of Geriatrics-SBGG (2007); Post Graduation (Lato Sensu) in Pain and Palliative Care by Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein 2009; Postgraduation (Lato Sensu) in Palliative Care for the Palliun- Oxford University UK (2010-2011); Post Graduation (Stricto Sensu) PhD in medical sciences at the University of São Paulo - FMUSP (2015);

Theodora Karnakis interest in working for elderly cancer patients dates to 2007. From 2010 to 2013 she was coordinator and founder of the Geriatric Oncology team at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein (HIAE). Since then she has been the author of the first Geriatric Oncology Book in Brazil and coordinator of two geriatric oncology national symposiums.Currently, she is a coordinating physician of the Geriatric Oncology service at the Cancer Institute of the State of São Paulo/University of São Paulo (ICESP / FMUSP) and at Sírio libanês Hospital, SP, Brazil.
Her priority is developing geriatric oncology research in Brazil and promoting interest and education for young medical oncologists and geriatricians in this area. She is a National Representative of the International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG) since 2012.

Manuela Zereu

Manuela Zereu, MD, PhD, is medical oncologist of Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Porto Alegre and Hospital Moinhos de Vento both located in Porto Alegre, Brasil.

Dr Zereu was graduated in Pontificia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 1994 and did his medical fellowship in Internal Medicine and Clinical Oncology from 1995 to 1999 in Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Porto Alegre and Fundação Federal de Ciências da Saúde, both in Porto Alegre, Brazil.  She earned her PhD in General Pathology from the Fundação Federal de Ciências da Saúde, in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 2007. Her principal interest in oncology is thoracic and genitourinary cancer in geriatric population.

Dr. Zereu  is an active member of SIOG, ESMO, ASCO and IALSC.
